DESIGN MANAGEMENT & STRATEGY

Portfolio Project - Mock Design Project

Air Force ROTC Mobile App

Throughout this course, I worked on a series of tasks typically part of a design manager’s job requirements and project development process. This portfolio consists of 10 design management deliverables over the course of three months.

I. PROJECT IDEA

I  composed an initial summary of my mock design project.  Includes objectives, problem, target audience, deliverables, tentative timeline & budget, competition, and client information.

II. CREATIVE BRIEF

Typically the creative brief is filled out by the client and returned to the design lead prior to the kick-off meeting, to be discussed in detail with the client. However for the purpose of this assignment, I (the design manager) created the brief for the "client."

III. KICK-OFF MEETING

For this component I assembled a kick-off meeting agenda (including interview questions), meeting notes, and a one-page statement about my impressions and learnings from the mock meeting.

IV. PROJECT TIMELINE

I drafted a schedule based on the scope, deliverables, and timeline discussed in the kick-off meeting and detailed in the creative brief, using a template found in my research that is best suited for my project type (pdf available here)

VI. BUDGET

For this component, I determined costs per task, phase, and finally the overall project cost. This budget reflects a realistic, competitive cost as if the actual client for this mock project were to invest in the mobile app.

V. TEAM REPORT

I prepared a report outlining the personnel needed to produce my mock project, prioritizing the skills, diversity and experience needed to organize an effective team structure. The personnel were selected from a list of provided candidates.  I included rationale behind the selection of each team member.

VII. USER PERSONAS

I created mock personas of potential user types for my project. The personas represent a diverse group of customers with equally diverse needs from the proposed project. Also included is a persona report describing how each persona would react to my project design (full pdf available here)

VIII. MOOD BOARDS

I searched multiple design resources to find design examples that would well as solutions to my project design needs. I considered three different creative directions for my project based on the project information gathered from my research, meeting notes, creative brief, personas, and client recommendations.

IX. FOCUS GROUP REPORT

I engineered an agenda, notes, and feedback on app features & functions, navigation, and design for a mock focus group session. I noted down comments, observations, key data points, and takeaways throughout the mock meeting.

X. CLIENT PRESENTATION

In the final component, I re-iterated my design concept to the "client," justifying my work and our team's approach using a multi-media presentation. This specific client presentation is at the conclusion of one of our "pretend" focus group sessions with 10 cadets.
